Focused on Family. Helping You Navigate the Adoption Process.
Below is a general description of our adoption practice areas. Please feel free to contact us for more information, or if your specific inquiry is not addressed below.
We represent stepparents, grandparents, and other relatives seeking to adopt a family member. We also represent same-sex couples seeking a second-parent adoption.
If you are adopting a child from an agency, whether traditional agency, agency-assisted, or otherwise, you will need an attorney to represent you in court and file the legal paperwork. We will work with your agency and help you finalize your adoption.
Sometimes, guardianship is an alternative to adoption. A guardian can have authority to make decisions on behalf of a child, without actually adopting the child. We can discuss whether guardianship or adoption would be a better fit for you and help you pursue either option.
FOSTER CARE ADOPTION
Adopting from foster care can be a challenging, but rewarding, experience. We help families seeking to adopt from foster care. This includes adoptions from Illinois DCFS or interstate adoptions from foster care in other states.
private or “identified” adoption
Private, or identified adoptions, are adoptions that occur without the assistance of an agency. In these adoptions, the adoptive parents and birth parents find each other directly. We will help you ensure your adoption is legally-binding and final. We can also assist with ensuring that your payments to birth mothers are within legal bounds.
If you do not see your specific legal issue listed here, please feel free to contact us. This website is intended to be a general overview of our services and may not include all practice areas. We most likely can handle your legal issue or refer you to another attorney who can.
International adoption is fraught with ever-changing rules and regulations. In some countries, you may adopt the child before coming home, but wish to readopt your child after entering the United States. Other countries only grant adoptive parents guardianship, and you will be required to formally adopt your child after you’ve entered the United States. We help families with both international adoption and international readoption.
If you facing a contested adoption, you need an attorney with litigation experience at your side. Our background in contested family law cases makes us uniquely qualified to represent you in a contested adoption. We will handle your case from start to finish without the need to refer it out to another attorney for litigation purposes.
